Mark McGuire

From the mid-western underground consciousness, guitarist/producer Mark McGuire emerges with his forthcoming 2014 Dead Oceans debut Along the Way. The conceptual album details the inner journey of an individual seeking definition and enlightenment. For those following McGuire's musical ascent thus far, the record is a culmination of a prodigious and prolific artist.

EP ANNOUNCE // Mark McGuire ‘Noctilucence’ EP Out 11/11 On Dead Oceans, Hear Title Track Now

“‘The term “noctilucence” comes from “noctilucent clouds”, the name given to clouds which, for some reason, emit a brilliant vibrance at night. On this recording we find our subject diving into the electric waters of the night sky, in long drives across the vast deserts of America. It’s a recording about the discovery and understanding of the shadow, entrance to the realm not controlled by the light of day, or the logic of reason. It’s about confronting nocturnal terrors and all of those things that go bump in the night…“Noctilucence” is a deep stare into the infinite eye of the shimmering night sky of the future, and all it holds in its gaze.” – Mark McGuire, 2014

Announced earlier today via Pitchfork, prolific Dead Oceans artist Mark McGuire will release Noctilucence, on November 11. The followup to the critically acclaimed Along The Way was written over the past two years between Los Angeles and McGuire’s hometown of Cleveland, OH. Keep an ear out for standout track “Noctilucence”, the sprawling and expansive 12 minute centerpiece of the EP that very well might be the most ambitious track McGuire has ever released. WATCH // Mark McGuire Shares New “The Human Condition (Song For My Father)” Video Via Noisey, Plays SXSW Next Week

Today Noisey premiered Mark McGuire‘s video for “The Human Condition (Song For My Father)”.

Here’s Mark on the story behind the song and video:
“[it's] about looking at the aspects of yourself that are hard to accept, but cannot be ignored. It’s about the heartbreak and neuroses that lie underneath the rug of all human relationships, and the attempt to resolve and overcome these issues, striving toward personal harmony.

“The song is dedicated to my father, who is an undeniable influence on my chemical makeup, and a huge influence on this album. It contains audio samples of a “celebrity roast” his family held in his honor in 1989. First he is caught off-guard and begins to prepare himself to be roasted, stating “I gotta get that plastic smile on…”

“Like many of our family events of that time, the roast was filmed by my uncle. For the music video I edited together some of the footage from that night; beginning with his entrance and general shock, all the way through dinner and various roasters, including a slideshow done that night by my grandfather, John Ryan McGuire. I also infused images of my family from my album Living with Yourself, a few clips I’ve filmed in the past couple of years, and some stock images of deep space, to further illustrate the cosmic properties of the family unit, and the inner personal temple.”

Mark’s new album Along The Way is out now worldwide. See him perform at SXSW next week with all dates and times here.

ALBUM RELEASE // Mark McGuire’s ‘Along The Way’ Out Now, Live Dates Start at SXSW In March

Mark McGuire‘s new album Along The Way is out now worldwide. Previously a member of trio Emeralds, Mark delivers a new concept album of personal reflection and enlightenment.

Listen to some tracks from the new album including a new remix by CFCF and others by Shinji, Prins Thomas [Lindstrom collaborator] or here on our Soundcloud page.

On Along The Way, McGuire writes in the liner notes,
“This story is an odyssey through the vast, unknown regions of the mind…the endless unfolding of psychological landscapes, leading to perpetual discoveries and expansions, in a genuinely emergent and infinite world of worlds.” Further he writes “[the new album] is not a critique, it is not instructional, nor is it a proclamation that I believe I have gone through this journey and succeeded, not by a long shot. It is, however, a journey that I truly believe is offered to every man and woman who has ever lived, through the lightness that breathes through your heart when you feel the true touch of life, and the light of love.”
