The Tallest Man on Earth

Kristian Matsson, aka the Tallest Man on Earth, is a 29-year-old songwriter from Dalarna, Sweden. The first recordings from the Tallest Man on Earth surfaced in 2006 via a self-titled EP released on the Swedish independent label Gravitation. Matsson followed this EP with his 2008 full length, Shallow Grave, an album that drew accolades from the likes of NPR and Pitchfork. Many in North America were introduced to the Tallest Man on Earth on a tour with Bon Iver, including a stop for two shows at the legendary New York City venue Town Hall. The Tallest Man on Earth was winning over audiences through powerful performances, taking the stage alone with his acoustic guitar and captivating the crowds night after night.

READ // Photographer Cameron Wittig Discusses Album Art For ‘Dark Bird Is Home’ From The Tallest Man On Earth Via Half-Past

DOC100full

Midwest photographer Cameron Wittig recently sat down with Half-Past to discuss the striking album cover on Dark Bird Is Home, the newest album from The Tallest Man On Earth (aka Sweden’s Kristian Matsson). What started as a ‘friendship birthed from a chance meeting, some friendly conversation, and copious Wisconsin wedding whisky’, the two met in 2014 at a felow musician’s country wedding. When the time came around for a new album cover, Matsson trusted Wittig to give a face to his new project. From the article (Which you can read in full here)-

“It was to be a photographic reinterpretation of stories that came out of discussions about the record and the recording process in Sweden. The figure of Dark Bird was born on a mountaintop near the town where Kristian lives. She may or may not be real. It doesn’t matter in the end, as she is more powerful as a specter, this beautiful figure of uncertainty and change.”

Primarily a portrait photographer, Cameron recruited the talents of a friend to be his model for the cover as they travelled around his neighborhood shooting on the steps of houses that felt just right.

“I asked her to stand on the steps of houses that I selected based on how they looked or felt. Nothing was planned ahead of time. We did maybe six or seven different houses in various ways. Some were fancy houses, some were not. A few were abandoned. But it was always this figure in an ambiguous stance. She looks like she could be returning; frozen in a moment of contemplation anticipating what might happen once she rings the bell. Or perhaps she’s leaving and taking one last look at what her life was before she leaves forever. I didn’t really decide what that was going to be.”

ALBUM RELEASE // The Tallest Man On Earth “Dark Bird Is Home” Out Now Worldwide

DOC100full

“On Dark Bird, Matsson’s voice, reedy and resonant, is recorded raw and seemingly almost inside the microphone. The effect is one of feeling a brain on fire while setting its sights on itself, and the byproduct is a yen for moments of serene relief as a result.”
NPR Music’s “First Listen”

“[‘Dark Bird Is Home’] finds Matsson in familiar territory: Pondering spirits, sorrow, and ‘the end’ amidst a backdrop of dust, daylight, and valleys. Matsson’s narrator is alone, but he longs to be in the company of someone else. And what begins as a simple acoustic number soon erupts into a multi-layered instrumental that sounds as pretty and contemplative as anything he’s ever done.”
ESQUIRE

“That voice undersells nothing: There are no wanly delivered lines, no flat and dour stretches of singing. His voice is prismatic, used like an old-guard storyteller who hews his words to any kind of feeling he wants. “
Pitchfork

The Tallest Man On Earth (aka Sweden’s Kristian Matsson) releases his fourth and fullest album, Dark Bird Is Home, today on Dead Oceans. It is deeper, darker more sophisticated and personal than anything The Tallest Man has previously created. Reliably, the melodies and arrangements are sturdy and classic, and the lyrics and their delivery are both comforting and alarming. You should expect the loudest and proudest songs yet from The Tallest Man On Earth on album number four, but also the softest and the lowest.

Tomorrow, The Tallest Man will kick off his first ever tour with a full-band, and next week he’ll make his late night television debut. In between Forecastle and Lollapalooza, he’s adding a Midwest tour, which will include a performance at the Newport Folk Festival, as well as an additional New York show in June. LISTEN // Hear the title track off new The Tallest Man On Earth album, “Dark Bird is Home” OUT MAY 12

“Dark Bird is Home” begins in a way that feels very familiar to fans of The Tallest Man On Earth; an acoustic guitar and Kristian Matsson’s identifiably wistful tenor, pastoral landscapes and lyrics about overcoming hardships in life and love. You almost forget about the orchestrated sound of “Sagres,” which opened our ears to the the more fleshed out sound of Dark Bird is Home, until the final phrase and the bands entrance. The instrumental coda is proof that Matsson’s new, band oriented musical direction, will support his heartfelt lyricism just as effectively as his past, more stripped down recordings.

You can pre-order the album via Secretly Distribution, iTunes, Amazon, or your local record store.
