Akron/Family – Sub Verses

“But Akron/Family build these disparate parts into something explosive or holy or both, time and again on Sub Verses. There’s no mythic volcano to stamp the narrative; there’s only a radical harmony, divergent strands threading together.”eMusic

“Way to spread the love, bros.”VICE

“Sub Verses may initially scare off the casual listener, but the album reveals itself to be an accomplished work once given time.”The 405

HAPPY DAY // Julianna Barwick Signs to Dead Oceans

Thursday is turning out to be a pretty great day! We have the great privilege of welcoming Julianna Barwick to the Dead Oceans family. The signing comes in conjunction with the announcement of Julianna’s new album, Nepenthe, set for release in August. It’s the follow-up to her The Magic Place, released in 2011.

Nepenthe was recorded with producer/engineer Alex Somers (Jónsi & Alex), a teenage female choir and members of Amiina and Múm. Stay tuned for more information on the forthcoming release! Until then, watch Julianna’s video for “The Magic Place” below.

Julianna has also confirmed a handful of summer shows. She’s all set to play at Yoko Ono’s Meltdown Festival in London on June 18. Other performances include the BSP Lounge in Kingston, NY on July 14 and England’s End of the Road Festival on September 1.

Phosphorescent Brings “Song for Zula” With Strings and Swagger to Late Night with Jimmy Fallon

Phosphorescent brought a transcendent performance of Muchacho‘s breakout hit “Song for Zula” to Late Night with Jimmy Fallon last night. The touring band was joined by a string section – making an already special rendition even more gorgeous. Grab a handkerchief and enjoy a good cry. This is television magic, people!

Also just in: a new feature about Phosphorescent at Urban Outfitters! And a word to you New Yorkers: go see Phosphorescent at the Crossing Brooklyn Ferry festival on Saturday night. It’ll be a Dessner-approved good time.
