Bleached’s ‘Can You Deal?’ EP + New Video for “Can You Deal?” Out Today

Bleached, led by sisters Jennifer and Jessica Clavin, have released the Can You Deal? EP today. Alongside the release they’ve shared a new video directed by Ryan Baxley for the title track, a song which deals with the band’s frustrations with gender bending used to define their music and the reductive habit of referring to them and others as “girl bands.” Jennifer Clavin describes the video,

“When Ryan told us his idea for this video we were excited because it reminded us of a Twilight Zone episode. In this story, our “human band” is viewed as extraterrestrial to the alien world, and we are trying to put an end to the exploitive media station known as “Singular World News.” We loved the idea of taking what this song is about, how being women in music is still viewed as a novelty, to a more dramatic level where we the humans are the aliens in this alternate society.”

Jennifer Clavin is publishing the limited edition “Can You Deal?” Zine, a collection of shared experiences on this subject through essay, visual art, poetry, lyrics and more from artists. For a full list of contributors, visit http://www.canyoudealzine.com/. All net proceeds will go to Planned Parenthood.

Bleached Share “Flipside,” New Song Off ‘Can You Deal?’ EP

40157f0a-381c-4fe5-9e5a-bba49f4caf2e

Bleached, led by sisters Jennifer and Jessica Clavin, are set to release the Can You Deal? EP on March 3rd. Recorded quickly in the midst of a break between months of touring, the EP captures the raw energy the band had been experiencing on stage. After sharing the title track “Can You Deal?”, which dealt with the band’s frustrations with gender being used to define their music & the reductive habit of referring to them and others as “girl bands”, Bleached now present “Flipside”, one of their best songs to date.

https://soundcloud.com/deadoceans/bleached-flipside-1/s-iIauE

Jennifer Clavin describes the song:

“I was thinking about the relationship we have with an album or a song and how we connect them to what is happening in our lives, like falling in love, being fascinated by a new friend, or some kind of pivotal moment in life corresponding with the record I’m listening to. Once the comedown of that time hits I can’t even listen to that record without thinking about that time or that person. Albums are the soundtrack to our lives, and this song is an ode to the nostalgia certain albums bring.”

As previously announced, Jennifer Clavin is publishing the limited edition “Can You Deal?” Zine, a collection of shared experiences on this subject through essay, visual art, poetry, lyrics and more from artists. An additional 500 copies of the zine will be printed as the first 500 sold out in 4 days! Newly added contributors include JD Samson, Bethany Cosentino (Best Coast), Cassie Ramone (Vivian Girls), Suzy Gardner and Donita Sparks (L7), Shannon Funchess (Light Asylum), Jenny Eliscu, and more. For a full list of contributors, visit http://www.canyoudealzine.com/. All net proceeds will go to Planned Parenthood.

Both the Can You Deal? EP and Zine are available for pre-order now. Bleached will tour North America supporting The Damned this spring.

I create music and art because I need to. To express, to bond, to reconcile, and to connect. And to use my voice. To have it received with such a generic labeling as “girl band” and consistently referenced as “female fronted” is insulting and reductive.  The title track to this EP, “Can You Deal?” is about this experience. Last year we released a deeply personal full length album titled Welcome The Worms. It was a record about being in an emotionally abusive relationship. It was a record about getting spun out on drugs and alcohol. It was a record about totally losing myself in order to find myself.  It was also our most ambitious body of work yet, with guitar work and guitar sounds and production we had only dreamed of until then.  And yet to this day I am still fielding interview questions that have more to do with my gender than with the art I am creating. Somehow the conversation usually derails into some variation of the following question: “What is it like to be a girl in a rock band?”. And the ensuing story will define us based on our sex. Why is gender pointed out in nearly all coverage of our band? Labeling me as a woman in a band just puts me in a box, and doesn’t allow everything else I am to be seen and heard. It’s 2017, Can You Deal with women playing rock and roll yet?

WATCH // Bleached Tear Through “Wednesday Night Melody” on ‘Late Night With Seth Meyers’

For the better part of this year, Bleached have been road warriors (hitting countless cities) in support of their sophomore album, Welcome The Worms. Last week, the band announced a fall, co-headlining tour with Beach Slang, and last night, they brought their lead radio single, “Wednesday Night Melody”, to Late Night with Seth Meyers. Aptly described by NPR Music,

“’Wednesday Night Melody’ perfectly captures the spirit of young adulthood. . . Bleached’s furious and fun sound, mixed with a slacker vibe, invites you to enjoy your youthful worries while they last.”

Passionately amped to crush it on national TV (on a Wednesday night, no less!), the ladies put on a killer presentation, further proving why radio stations across the country are keeping Bleached on heavy rotation. Catch Bleached on the road in the months to come! All tour dates are below, including a slew of newly added dates.

Bonus! Jessie Clavin recently spoke with Deli Magazine about the pedals she uses, hop on over to check it out!
