On Fillmore Announce Select Dates For Summer

3hhs_onfillmore2_7It is all too rare that percussionist Glenn Kotche and bassist Darin Gray are able to convene for their On Fillmore project. Once dubbed “the rhythm section’s revenge” by Jim O’Rourke, Kotche and Gray traveled to Japan earlier this year, both to perform their own shows and and play in O’Rourke’s band. The duo’s moody November 2009 Dead Oceans debut, Extended Vacation, was celebrated by those who realized just how special an occassion it is when these two talents get together. The New York Times called the album, “a peculiar update of early-1960s exotica, with a heart of darkness in place of a setting sun,” and NPR’s Bob Boilen named Extended Vacation as one of his favorite albums of the fall. Since the album’s release, Kotche and Gray have been engaged in sporadic but intense rehearsals, attempting to hone the subtle complexities of the album (which features exotic bird calls, marching band explosions and purring motors) into a robust live experience.

ON FILLMORE Debuts Master Moon Video

There’s something pitch perfect about this eerie and playful time-lapse video for On Fillmore’s “Master Moon,” a song culled from 2009′s excellent vibe-heavy Extended Vacation. Directed by Pat Burns and taken from raw footage by On Fillmore, the video captures the isolation of life whilst on perpetual tour (on Venus). Check out the clip below.

ON FILLMORE Scores Documentary on Underground Horror Films

If you’ve ever studied film, you know that the right soundtrack can easily multiply the fear factor of a horror movie. For JT Petty’s 2006 documentary “S&Man,” ON FILLMORE’S eerie score does the trick. Petty’s film examines the comparison between filmmaking and voyeurism, within the context of underground fetish films. Hear a sample of On Fillmore’s music backing these disturbing images in the trailer below. For more info on “S&Man,” see the film’s IMDb page HERE.

ON FILLMORE’S Extended Vacation Released Today, Highlighted In The New York Times

Today, the “rhythm section’s revenge” otherwise known as ON FILLMORE, the collaboration of Wilco’s Glenn Kotche and bassist Darin Gray, release unto the world their sultry, lovely Dead Oceans’ debut, Extended Vacation. The album is a confusing and comforting journey that features moody vibes, noir-film bass approaches, jungle predators, exotic birdcalls and ominous, rattling war drums. Don’t you think you deserve a little vacay?

This week, Extended Vacation was featured in The New York Times’ Sunday Playlist, in which critic Nate Chinen said of the piece: “It all suggests a peculiar update of early-1960s exotica, with a heart of darkness in place of a setting sun.” Read the entire review HERE.
