Erika_12JKT EPS_r3

“’Puberty 2’ is purple like a new bruise . . . There’s more variety in her singing, which moves from aggrieved to sultry to resigned. And there’s more ambition in the music, which doubles down on grit while also rounding things out with a buffer of soul.” – The New York Times

“These 11 tracks creep up on you, as her coiled melodies suddenly explode into cavernous freak-outs or build to a crescendo of unbearable catharsis.” — NPR Music

“No one else can make shattering sound like such an act of strength. “ – Stereogum

Anticipation is a key component of happiness. The not-yet-having of something only strengthens your resolve to hold out a little longer, to make space for it in your life. Well here we are, the day’s finally arrived. Mitski’s debut record for Dead Oceans, Puberty 2, is out worldwide today.

It’s already being heralded as one of the best albums of the year thus far by Stereogum (#3) and Brooklyn Magazine (#1). With the likes of The New Yorker, NPR Music, and Dazed joining the well-deserved chorus of praise. Not to mention, last Sunday’s The New York Times went deep on the album.

Puberty 2 is an indelible collection of songs crafted thoughtfully from memories and details (whose size & importance shift depending on the eye of the beholder). These are important pieces of writing that process being alive and being in love – or just being at all. We are so proud to be able to share this in full with you today. LISTEN // Mitski Shares New Single, “Happy”

Here it is, your second slice of Mitski’s gutsy and gorgeous new album, Puberty 2, out June 17th. “Happy” is the forthcoming album’s biting opening track, a song that quickly escalates from intricate electronic pads to rumbling drums and a rare use of horns. Here’s what Mitski had to say about this cut,

“Happiness f**ks you. Once it’s in your hands you try to hold onto it, but the nature of happiness is that it passes through and eventually leaves, and something else – sadness, anger, a low after the high – has to follow. This song is about this exhaustive and exhausting cycle, and how sometimes one would rather not have any of it at all than be constantly thrown about by the waves of these fleeting states.”

So dive into this track head first – put your headphones on, shut out the world for 3:40. It’ll be there when you get back.

WATCH // Mitski Shares “Your Best American Girl” Video; ‘Puberty 2’ Out 6/17

Mitski’s phenomenal “Your Best American Girl” has been rolling around our heads, glued to the walls of our hearts, since it came out. Not to mention it’s received heaps of praise from the likes of NPR Music, The FADER, Pitchfork, and Rolling Stone, for its original portrayal of feeling “half Japanese, half American, but not fully either.”

Today, Mitski presents the absolutely perfect video for this bold number. Directed by Zia Anger with cinematography by Ashley Conner, art direction by Caiti Hawkins and styling by Creatures of the Wind, the “Your Best American Girl” video further plays on the idea of, as a Japanese girl, never quite fitting in with the genre’s surplus of white American guys, and is further proof that 2016 will be a breakout year for one Mitski Miyawaki.
