The Beautiful New Stranger In Town – Winston Yellen Performs Live for Fuel/Friends

Winston Yellen and his brother, Abe, returned to their hometown at the end of last year to perform a few songs for Fuel/Friends. The beautiful session includes a heartbreaking cover of Damien Jurado’s “Everything Trying,” plus two originals off Night Beds’ Country Sleep, released just yesterday. Watch all three songs above!

Night Beds are wasting no time in conquering the road and world of touring. Winston and the crew will perform on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon (win tickets) this Friday, February 8. They also stopped by the NPR offices today for their first Tiny Desk concert. More details on that performance to come, but check out these photos – #1 & #2 – until you can watch the real thing.

Lastly, Winston talked to The Tennessean’s Kevin Walters on the Music City Podcast. Listen to the interview HERE.

Night Beds – Country Sleep

“The guy is blessed with jump-out-of-the-gym vocal athleticism…the beautiful, new stranger in town.”
- Pitchfork

“Gregarious and unassuming in appearance, he looks like any other 23 year-old from Colorado Springs, but when he sat down at the microphone and opened his mouth to sing the a capella “Faithful Heights,” we all fell completely silent. Dumbstruck. That voice just flies out of him, with no warning….I think Winston’s efforts could be one of the most notable and promising of the year that lies ahead of us.”Fuel/Friends

“There’s a lot of dudes out there with sad tales of heartbreak and failure, but to be honest, they never sound this good.”MTV Hive

Watch The Tallest Man On Earth with Idiot Wind Covering Damien Jurado’s “Working Titles”

The Tallest Man On Earth, Kristian Matsson, collaborated on a cover with his wife, Idiot Wind’s Amanda Hollingby Matsson, of Damien Jurado’s “Working Titles.” This standout song from Damien’s newest record, Maraqopa, was voted the #1 song of 2012 yesterday by Speakers In Code.

This will be the last bloggy from Dead Oceans until we get back from Xmas break! HAVE A VERY SAFE, HAPPY HOLIDAY, FRIENDS! Get your resolutions in order, and we’ll see you soon. <3

Watch Yours Truly’s New John Vanderslice Video! North.American Tour Starts Today In Portland

Today NPR premiered the live video of John Vanderslice’s “Overcoat” from the White Wilderness recording sessions. JV, Minna Choi and her Magik*Magik Orchestra’s were filmed by Yours Truly at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley, California.

Click here to watch the video at NPR and read a bit more about JV’s experience, “That whole session was so challenging for me and so inspiring and thrilling that halfway through the first day, I thought this is the way I need to make records – this is it.”

John Vanderslice begins a nation-wide tour today, the majority of which is with Damien Jurado. JV has declared both April and May “Audience Participation Month” and has these words to share about the tour:

So, as you may have heard, April is Audience Participation Month. We kindly ask you to be part of our live show in one of the following ways.
- You can sing lead or harmony vocal on “Trance Manual”
- You can play a solo on “Exodus Damage” with an instrument of your choice, the weirder the better.
- You can trigger that cool squiggly sound in “Underneath The Leaves”.
- You can also choose your own adventure. Again, the stranger the better.

Email me with your awesome ideas.
NB: May is also Audience Participation Month.

The 6/17 concert at the Herbst Theatre in San Francisco will include instrumentation by 30 members of the Magik*Magik Orchestra.

Following the much lauded release of White Wilderness, John Vanderslice will go on tour this spring, bringing you the essence behind the lush collaboration with Minna Choi and The Magik*Magik Orchestra as well as those JV fan favorites.

Joining him will be drummer/percussionist Jason Slota. This tour will very much be an intimate affair, much like the shows the duo have recently been playing in the Bay Area. The photo below says it all.

Most of the tour support will come from Damien Jurado, who JV just played a house show with in Tacoma, WA. Stay tuned for some sweet footage of that night!

Full tour dates, after ze jump.
