WATCH // Strand of Oaks’ NPR Tiny Desk Concert

Strand of Oaks’ Tiny Desk Concert is a great example of not only why this series is awesome, but also a testament to Tim Showalter’s songwriting that when he slows his anthemic rockers down, they become beautiful and contemplative. “Goshen ’97” gets special treatment here, and “Plymouth” and “JM” retain their energy and gain new poetic weight from the stripped down approach.

WATCH // The Tallest Man On Earth Daytime Debut On CBS This Morning

“In his sold-out concert at the Beacon Theater on Wednesday, he used every inch of his long guitar cord to roam the stage: darting around, crouching, stretching, hip-twitching, perching briefly and jittering away, but always ending up back at the microphone when he had more words to sing. Which was often, because for all his hyperactivity Mr. Matsson is a guitar-slinger rooted in folk, and his songs are troubadour ballads at heart, carrying knotty, imagistic verses. . . And while his melodies could often be ballads, his guitar playing offers them no repose: It’s quick strumming or even faster fingerpicking, always pushing.”

— The New York Times

“’Dark Bird’ began with Matsson playing and singing alone and built to a rousing conclusion that brought a crowd who had listened in rapt attention all night to its feet, shouting approval. It was a fitting summary of one Man’s evolving musical journey.” — Washington Post

The Tallest Man on Earth’s North American tour in support of Dark Bird Is Home concluded with a run of vibrant sold out performances at Washington, D.C.’s Lincoln Theatre and New York’s Beacon Theatre and Music Hall of Williamsburg, plus a daytime television debut on CBS This Morning: Saturday. This past Saturday to early risers across the globe, Kristian Matsson and his five-piece band performed Dark Bird Is Home single, “Sagres,” and album opener “Fields of Our Home,” plus “Like The Wheel,” a favorite from 2010’s Sometimes the Blues Is Just A Passing Bird, for a web-exclusive. Following last month’s late night television debut on Conan, this was a wonderful way to end The Tallest Man’s first-ever full band tour, and it was clearly evident to the band and sold out rooms, this is merely the beginning of great things to come in support of this new record.

The Tallest Man On Earth’s Dark Bird Is Home is out now on Dead Oceans. The next North American run includes performances at Forecastle, Eaux Claires Festival, Newport Folk Festival, Lollapalooza, and MusicfestNW. All tour dates are below.

WATCH // Ryley Walker Performs “The High Road” and “Sweet Satisfaction” At Braund Studios NYC

“His new album displays a kinship for Fairport Convention, Tim Buckley, Nick Drake, Joni Mitchell and Burt Jansch, but Walker is a restless presence and powerful player, one whose compositions offer structural diversions and an overall expansiveness. The 10 songs move with a measured looseness, with Walker and his miraculous backing band of Chicago jazz players allowing plenty of space for tightly improvised explorations.”
Los Angeles Times

Ryley Walker’s summer tour in support of his Dead Oceans’ debut, Primrose Green, kicks off tomorrow in Los Angeles with an Aquarium Drunkard-presented show at The Echo. In conjunction with the start of his busy summer, Walker is sharing two new stunning live videos of Primrose Green cuts, “Sweet Satisfaction” and “The High Road.” The videos were recorded at Braund Studios in Brooklyn during CMJ 2014. WATCH // New Artist Kevin Morby Premiers Video For “Parade”

3hhs_kmorby

We’re ecstatic to welcome Kevin Morby to Dead Oceans. From the moment we first heard his 2013 debut, Harlem River, we’ve held the deep belief that Kevin was doing something special. Frankly, we couldn’t be more excited to work with such a world class songwriter. Both Harlem River and it’s 2014 follow up, Still Life, have graced more than a few of our Best-of-the-Year lists and clocked in hours on our turntables. We’re thrilled that Kevin is currently working on his Dead Oceans debut, due in 2016. If you haven’t heard either of his albums on the always-great Woodsist label, let us know. They’re must listens!

Today you can explore NYC alongside Kevin in his new video for “Parade”. The video, directed by Elise Tyler, adds a cheerful coda to the lifestyle change (spurred by a cross-country move) Morby explored on Still Life. Tyler on the video,

‘Parade’ is a tribute to New York City – one of the many love songs artists have written for this pulsating place. The process was a complete collaboration with Kevin – he wanted to document the people and places that make up his New York. I wanted to feature the quieter places and moments that can get lost in the noise of the city, which also reflects Kevin’s nature as an artist and individual.”

Check out his tour dates below, and be sure to keep an eye out for the big things he’s cooking up.

READ // Photographer Cameron Wittig Discusses Album Art For ‘Dark Bird Is Home’ From The Tallest Man On Earth Via Half-Past

DOC100full

Midwest photographer Cameron Wittig recently sat down with Half-Past to discuss the striking album cover on Dark Bird Is Home, the newest album from The Tallest Man On Earth (aka Sweden’s Kristian Matsson). What started as a ‘friendship birthed from a chance meeting, some friendly conversation, and copious Wisconsin wedding whisky’, the two met in 2014 at a felow musician’s country wedding. When the time came around for a new album cover, Matsson trusted Wittig to give a face to his new project. From the article (Which you can read in full here)-

“It was to be a photographic reinterpretation of stories that came out of discussions about the record and the recording process in Sweden. The figure of Dark Bird was born on a mountaintop near the town where Kristian lives. She may or may not be real. It doesn’t matter in the end, as she is more powerful as a specter, this beautiful figure of uncertainty and change.”

Primarily a portrait photographer, Cameron recruited the talents of a friend to be his model for the cover as they travelled around his neighborhood shooting on the steps of houses that felt just right.

“I asked her to stand on the steps of houses that I selected based on how they looked or felt. Nothing was planned ahead of time. We did maybe six or seven different houses in various ways. Some were fancy houses, some were not. A few were abandoned. But it was always this figure in an ambiguous stance. She looks like she could be returning; frozen in a moment of contemplation anticipating what might happen once she rings the bell. Or perhaps she’s leaving and taking one last look at what her life was before she leaves forever. I didn’t really decide what that was going to be.”
