WATCH // New Destroyer Video For “Times Square”

…such a striking and involving piece of work. In fact, it’s Bejar’s best. The only bad news for the man himself is that he’s just raised expectations even higher.” – The Guardian **** Album of the Week

The guy’s sitting down among all the noise around him; it’s a perfect example of the considered, measured chaos and wilful determination evident across Poison Season; a mere nano-second of perfection on an album riddled with such moments” – Record Collector **** Album of the Month

The prolific Canadian’s latest blaze of glory” – Uncut 8/10

Following the release of latest single Times Square taken from Destroyer’s critically acclaimed upcoming album Poison Season, we are now happy to share the video.

A video that’s true to Bejar’s ethos, it has a seemingly obtuse take on the what you’d imagine the Times Square is like – bricks and mortar replaced by green spaces; robotic, busy New Yorkers replaced with animals in animation – it’s more Wallace & Gromit than Wall Street.

We ended up just wandering around New York till 3am and the city seemed completely dead. We could have been anywhere, really.” says director Shayne Ehman of an ill-fated trip to Times Square to shoot the video with Dan Bejar.

Realising that the video didn’t have to be shot at the New York landmark, Ehman sought inspiration from the song’s lyrics. “I needed to get outside and shoot in natural light in order to serve as a sort of conduit for those ‘forces of nature in love…’ which seem to rule the song.” he continues, “I let the sun do its thing and let the earth do its thing and watched time unfold. I watched the clouds unfold and unpack and pack up. I was at their mercy, completely.

Poison Season is out worldwide tomorrow, 28 August. Destroyer begins their tour at the end of October. Video for Girl In A Sling and tour dates below.

LISTEN // Kevin Morby Shares “Moonshiner” Off Upcoming 7″ Out Sept. 4, Announces European Tour

In anticipation of Kevin Morby’s Dead Oceans debut in 2016 and in support of a thorough fall touring schedule, we’re pleased to announce a 7″ slated for release this September. “Moonshiner” and “Bridge To Gaia” are two unreleased gems from Morby’s reliably powerful, yet understated work. The 7-inch is out September 4th, but we’re sharing “Moonshiner” today.

Says Morby, “I wrote ‘Moonshiner’ a few years ago after reading what has become one of my favorite contemporary books: The Sisters Brothers. The book was very inspiring to me at that time and it pulled a few different songs out of me – ‘Moonshiner’ being the most directly influenced. I wrote the b-side, ‘Bridge To Gaia,’ while on vacation in Porto, Portugal. I ended up there after a tour and it quickly became my favorite city in all of Europe. The apartment I was renting was at the foot of a bridge that would take you to the town across the river, Gaia. It, like everything about Porto, is immensely beautiful and inspiring. It’s a different beauty than I had ever experienced. There was almost something sinister to it. The clouds moved fast, there was always a bell tolling and all the school kids wore capes. This song came out of all that.”

WATCH // Destroyer Shares Video For “Girl in a Sling”, Album ‘Poison Season’ out August 28

Earlier today, Destroyer released the video for “Girl in a Sling” off of his upcoming album Poison Season, out August 28 on Dead Oceans Of the video, director David Galloway says:

“Bejar sings a lot about cities and girls and injury, sometimes all at the same time. Sometimes they are the same thing, as surreal novelists would have us believe. Besides, people like to see Dan sing – which he doesn’t do a lot of in this video, but he does do a little bit. We wanted to make a video that dealt with central Destroyer themes: to some, Destroyer is a lech; to some, he is an arsonist; to some, he is a savior. To me, he is the consummate comedian, but he resists that role. So we decided to go the opposite way and make something sad, something tragic, something that fits the new record. The adage “comedy equals tragedy plus time” is attributed to Carol Burnett’s mum. Or it might have been Steve Allen. Either way, I always want Dan to do physical comedy, but he resists. He’s a natural, though. He’s the Pacific Northwest’s Buster Keaton, and I hope one day to share that with the world. One day. For now, though, there’s just this sadness. This poison season.”

Pre-order Poison Season now on iTunes, Amazon, and your local indie store.

Destroyer will be hitting the road in September for a world tour. Full dates after the jump

WATCH // Strand of Oaks’ NPR Tiny Desk Concert

Strand of Oaks’ Tiny Desk Concert is a great example of not only why this series is awesome, but also a testament to Tim Showalter’s songwriting that when he slows his anthemic rockers down, they become beautiful and contemplative. “Goshen ’97” gets special treatment here, and “Plymouth” and “JM” retain their energy and gain new poetic weight from the stripped down approach.
