It’s Monday and what better way to kick off your week than with a new Sun Airway remix? South African producer DJ Spoko takes on “Black Noise” and reworks the Soft Fall track with his ‘Bacardi House’ styling. Clash calls the remix “a fun, buoyant affair which completely inverts the dream pop nature of the original.” Listen to “Black Noise (DJ Spoko Remix)” above.
Sun Airway released their sophomore album, Soft Fall, in early October. They kicked things off with a record release show at one of Philadelphia’s awesome Making Time parties. BITBY.TV was there to catch it all, including the ridiculously cool light show. Watch SA perform “Close” above.
Jon Barthmus and NAM’s Takayuki Nakazawa sat down with Redefine Magazine to talk about the Soft Fall artwork and the experience of working together. Read the interview HERE.
“My first idea was that instead of using natural light as we did in our previous work, it would be better to create an even more realistic visual. I thought it would be interesting to organize a scene with a picturesque arrangement of vegetation, tableware, and glassware. Similar to how Millais depicted Ophelia1… We also added just a little erotic element as a sort of secret ingredient. I thought these things would bring some depth to the fantasy-like world we were creating.” – Takayuki Nakazawa
REMINDER: Sun Airway head to M for Montreal on November 16! They’ll perform with SUUNS, Memoryhouse and D’eon. You can win two tickets to the show on our Facebook. Additional dates listed HERE.

Praise for Soft Fall
“Merging with the already gleaming major-key synths, the strings provide grandeur and romantic swirl. They also effectively confuse the listener’s comportment toward space and time. The album title, says Barthmus, is meant to capture a state of weightlessness. And floating moments certainly abound, especially on the closing track, ‘Over My Head’ (which, Barthmus says, isn’t a Fleetwood Mac reference), as pulsing strings and twinkling synths gradually rise into a melodious tidal wave.” – Village Voice
“This brilliant album is colourful, giddy and immensely enjoyable from start to finish. He’s combined a sparkly and woozy aesthetic with killer melodies to create a cohesive and fun winning formula.” – Music OMH
“Sun Airway’s Jon Barthmus doesn’t aim small. Soft Fall, the Philly native’s sophomore album, is symphonic electro-pop in the most literal sense, blending fragmented orchestral loops with glittery synth pulses and moody ambience — capturing the grandiose sweep of M83′s Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming in half the running time, without the spoken word bits and puzzling interludes about frogs.” – eMusic

In addition to the album stream, MTV Hive has a wonderful interview with Jon. They delve into his visual arts background and how it’s influenced the direction of his music!
“It’s always been fundamental to make it so that you don’t need the backstory and the information. I’d like for a listener to just be able to get with it regardless of any of that. I like the idea that it’s enjoyable without any of that but if you’re looking for it, there’s plenty of layers for you to get into.” – Jon

Jon recently gave an interview at DIY, indulging the reader with a bit of backstory to each track on the new record. “Black Noise” is in fact a “love song to the silence of a radio tuned to dead air.” When writing “Black Noise” Jon comments it was “unintentionally sounding like the most ‘pop’ thing he’s ever done” and so he went with it. To find out more about the album, head HERE.
“The songs are expansive, often shrouded in mysterious instrumentation, abstract off-turns, all without teetering into the realms of artistic snobbery.” – Jamie Milton, DIY
