Dead Oceans At SXSW 2016

SXSW starts next week! Which means tons of folks (maybe you included?) are headed to our backyard of Austin, TX for a week full of bands, tacos, more bands, and more tacos. We’re excited to add to the madness with a totally stacked schedule. Maybe we’ll catch each others eye as you’re crowd-surfing to Bleached? Or perhaps we can cut a rug together at Marlon Williams‘ set? Kevin Morby‘s playing on a boat cruise, so that’s an option too. Obviously, we’ll hi-five, pogo, & sing along at Mitski‘s sets. Keep scrolling for their full schedules and don’t forget to make a note of our party on Thursday (3/17) night at Barracuda!

WATCH // Marlon Williams To Release Self Titled Debut LP February 19th, Shares Video For “Dark Child”

Marlon Williams broke out in stride with his incredible voice and masterful stage presence in Australia and New Zealand last year surrounding the release of his debut, self-titled album. He topped off the year winning Best Male Solo Artist and Breakthrough Artist of the Year at the New Zealand Music Awards, where he performed new single, “Dark Child,” attended the ARIA Awards in Australia, where he was nominated for Best Blues & Roots Album, and made his morning television debut performing “Hello Miss Lonesome” on “ABC Breakfast TV” in Australia.

It’s now time for Williams to make his mark on North America and the rest of the world. His debut album will see its release outside of NZ/Australia on Feb. 19 via Dead Oceans. But before that day’s arrival, Williams kicks off the year presenting the twisted video for the aforementioned single “Dark Child” where director Damian Golfinopoulos deconstructs the idea of a shared tragedy as if it were a deranged game played out on a movie set by a procession of actors. And at the end of the month, Marlon Williams & The Yarra Benders’ debut headline tour in North America begins. The band will be a four piece: Marlon Williams (guitar/vocals), Gus Agars (drum/vocals), Ben Woolley (bass/vocals) and Dave Khan (electric guitar/mandolin/fiddle/vocals). All dates are below.

WATCH // Mark McGuire Shares New “The Human Condition (Song For My Father)” Video Via Noisey, Plays SXSW Next Week

Today Noisey premiered Mark McGuire‘s video for “The Human Condition (Song For My Father)”.

Here’s Mark on the story behind the song and video:
“[it’s] about looking at the aspects of yourself that are hard to accept, but cannot be ignored. It’s about the heartbreak and neuroses that lie underneath the rug of all human relationships, and the attempt to resolve and overcome these issues, striving toward personal harmony.

“The song is dedicated to my father, who is an undeniable influence on my chemical makeup, and a huge influence on this album. It contains audio samples of a “celebrity roast” his family held in his honor in 1989. First he is caught off-guard and begins to prepare himself to be roasted, stating “I gotta get that plastic smile on…”

“Like many of our family events of that time, the roast was filmed by my uncle. For the music video I edited together some of the footage from that night; beginning with his entrance and general shock, all the way through dinner and various roasters, including a slideshow done that night by my grandfather, John Ryan McGuire. I also infused images of my family from my album Living with Yourself, a few clips I’ve filmed in the past couple of years, and some stock images of deep space, to further illustrate the cosmic properties of the family unit, and the inner personal temple.”

Mark’s new album Along The Way is out now worldwide. See him perform at SXSW next week with all dates and times here.
