The Donkeys Ride: Pre-Order Special, Massive US Tour, Release Party

The Donkeys — The Pride of San Diego — are about to release their finest record to date. Born with Stripes (released April 26 in the US) sheds a bit of  the golden SoCal twang of previous efforts and places to the fore the influence of some other Cali artists — notably Pavement and the folkier leanings of Beck. And with a pre-order special launched today, you can have the entire record for your first backyard BBQ of the year this weekend. Pre-order the album now, and you will receive an mp3 download of the entire record. If you’re one of the first 25 people to pre-order the record, you will receive a two free tickets for a show on The Donkeys massive U.S. tour when they visit your respective area. Hell, we’ll even get the dudes to give you a mid-set shout-out. Maybe buy you a shot (?!?). The lucky 25 will also receive a large poster featuring the killer Born with Stripes album art by badass illustrator Tony Millionaire, best known as creator of comics Maakies and Sock Monkey, as well as the Adult Swim show Drinky Cow. The throwback-psych album art contains several easter eggs alluding to various lyrics from the record. Think the art from Prince’s Around the World in a Day for the surfer set (See below). Truly a gem.

PRE-ORDER BORN WITH STRIPES

Before the national tour begins, The Donkeys have a hometown Born with Stripes record release blow-out planned for April 30 at San Diego’s Sushi Art. If you like rock music made by guitars, you should probably be there. Word has it there will be pinatas filled with booze (maybe in mini-bottle form, maybe just loose liquid). See all upcoming tour dates HERE.

The Donkeys are back!  Our chilled-out San Diego brothers have returned from The Island and will have a brand new record out on April 26th. Born With Stripes is an altogether less twangy affair than the band’s 2008 Dead Oceans debut, Living On The Other Side. The nods to Grateful Dead and Buffalo Springfield are better balanced with echoes of other Cali arists, notably Pavement and Beck. The country-rock flairs are often overtaken by powerpop hooks. What some might call a lazy melody is really just a melody on its own clock. Nice and relaxed.

The album was mixed by Pernice Brothers’ Thom Monahan, whose involvement not only gives us the crispest, warmest Donkeys recordings to date, it also serves to remind us of the band’s loose connections to an array of psych-dappled kindred spirits: Vetiver, Papercuts, Brightblack Morning Light, Devendra Banhart. Monahan was not the only outsider the band collaborated with on Born With Stripes. The playful album artwork was created by California illustrator and cartoonist Tony Millionaire, best known for his comics Maakies and Sock Monkey, and as the creator of the Adult Swim show Drinky Crow.

Please check out the songs below, and head over to our tour page to see when they’ll be coming to your town.

We Promise This Is The Last Ever Lost Post… Probably

About a month ago we let you in on the little secret about Geronimo Jackson. For those who have not been keeping score, it was revealed that Geronimo Jackson are actually the Donkeys. Geronimo Jackson were purported to be a ’70s psychedelic band that was often referenced on Lost. Well, it seems as though the creators of Lost thought that the gaming community needed a little dose of “Dharma Lady” and added it to Rock Band 2. That’s right, John Locke is playing a song penned by The Donkeys in Rock Band 2. Apparently Rock Band 2 rated the game as “supervision recommended.” I don’t get it either. Word on the street is that members of the Donkeys have had little success playing their own song on Rock Band 2, losing during the second guitar solo.

The Donkeys and “The End” of L O S T

There are a lot of hardcore LOST fans here at Dead Oceans, and we don’t really know what to make of the finale. We’re all still processing!  What I do know, though, is that there were a TON of commercials last night.  There were a few, though, that I wasn’t very bothered by because they featured the Geronimo Jackson song “Dharma Lady.”

On Friday a cool interview went up at the Paste website with Tim DeNardo from The Donkeys about becoming Geronimo Jackson and contributing a song for the show. Mystery = solved.

The Target commercials for LOST are pretty funny. It would have been funnier if they had been for polar bear traps, Jacob-killing daggers or giant ankhs or something, but I guess they have to move merchandise.  Each one ended with a little riff from “Dharma Lady.”  Coooooool!

If your interest in The Donkeys has been piqued, might I suggest purchasing their excellent album Living On the Other Side? It features the original version of “Dharma Lady” (“Excelsior Lady”).  They are also about to go on tour with WHY? on the west coast, so please check out their new tour dates.

I leave you with this hilarious fan video of Juliet and Sawyer’s beautiful relationship, set to the recording of “Dharma Lady.” Enjoy.
