LISTEN // Kevin Morby Shares “Moonshiner” Off Upcoming 7″ Out Sept. 4, Announces European Tour

In anticipation of Kevin Morby’s Dead Oceans debut in 2016 and in support of a thorough fall touring schedule, we’re pleased to announce a 7″ slated for release this September. “Moonshiner” and “Bridge To Gaia” are two unreleased gems from Morby’s reliably powerful, yet understated work. The 7-inch is out September 4th, but we’re sharing “Moonshiner” today.

Says Morby, “I wrote ‘Moonshiner’ a few years ago after reading what has become one of my favorite contemporary books: The Sisters Brothers. The book was very inspiring to me at that time and it pulled a few different songs out of me – ‘Moonshiner’ being the most directly influenced. I wrote the b-side, ‘Bridge To Gaia,’ while on vacation in Porto, Portugal. I ended up there after a tour and it quickly became my favorite city in all of Europe. The apartment I was renting was at the foot of a bridge that would take you to the town across the river, Gaia. It, like everything about Porto, is immensely beautiful and inspiring. It’s a different beauty than I had ever experienced. There was almost something sinister to it. The clouds moved fast, there was always a bell tolling and all the school kids wore capes. This song came out of all that.”

WATCH // Destroyer Shares Video For “Girl in a Sling”, Album ‘Poison Season’ out August 28

Earlier today, Destroyer released the video for “Girl in a Sling” off of his upcoming album Poison Season, out August 28 on Dead Oceans Of the video, director David Galloway says:

“Bejar sings a lot about cities and girls and injury, sometimes all at the same time. Sometimes they are the same thing, as surreal novelists would have us believe. Besides, people like to see Dan sing – which he doesn’t do a lot of in this video, but he does do a little bit. We wanted to make a video that dealt with central Destroyer themes: to some, Destroyer is a lech; to some, he is an arsonist; to some, he is a savior. To me, he is the consummate comedian, but he resists that role. So we decided to go the opposite way and make something sad, something tragic, something that fits the new record. The adage “comedy equals tragedy plus time” is attributed to Carol Burnett’s mum. Or it might have been Steve Allen. Either way, I always want Dan to do physical comedy, but he resists. He’s a natural, though. He’s the Pacific Northwest’s Buster Keaton, and I hope one day to share that with the world. One day. For now, though, there’s just this sadness. This poison season.”

TOUR ANNOUNCE // The Tallest Man On Earth Extends Summer Tour, Records WFUV Performance Session At Electric Lady Studios

“You play directly to one person,” he laughs. “Because at most shows there’s a couple there – one who’s a really big fan and one who’s been dragged along and is bored. So I focus on the one that’s bored and try to make them smile or laugh. I look at them for a while. Then I don’t look at them. Then I know there’s a part coming up where I can make eye contact. It’s inspiring to try to connect to people in a different way to how we do normally.”
The Guardian

After playing sold out shows at both Music Hall of Williamsburg and The Beacon Theater in New York, The Tallest Man On Earth (aka Sweden’s Kristian Matsson) recorded an intimate set at the legendary Electric Lady Studios in lower Manhattan for WFUV. The group performed several songs including “Sagres” off of Dark Bird Is Home and “Like The Wheel” from Sometimes The Blues Is Just A Passing Bird, plus a special first-time performance of “If I Could Only Fly,” a song originally written by Blaze Foley and made famous by Merle Haggard. Coming off of television appearances on Conan and CBS This Morning: Saturday, The Tallest Man’s WFUV performance is yet another captivating moment on a tour that will span the country.

The Tallest Man On Earth Dark Bird Is Home is out now on Dead Oceans. The next North American run includes performances at Forecastle, Eaux Claires Festival, Newport Folk Festival, Lollapalooza, and MusicfestNW. All tour dates are below.

ALBUM ANNOUNCE // Destroyer Announces ‘Poison Season’ Out 8/28, World Tour

Hey Destroyer fans, it’s Poison Season. Vancouver’s Dan Bejar returns with a new full-length and world tour. Poison Season opens swathed in Hunky Dory strings as Bejar channels a dashboard Bowie surveying four wracked characters – Jesus, Jacob, Judy, Jack – simultaneously Biblical and musical theatre. This Bittersweet, Times Square-set fanfare is reprised twice more on the record – first as swaying saxophone-stoked “street-rock” and then finally as a curtain-closing reverie. Check out lead single “Dream Lover” above.

“The first and last songs are actually one song tracked live with quintet. I even sang with the band. That song always swung between super austere and super mid-’70s Springsteen/Bowie street-rock. In the end, I decided I wanted both. Couldn’t really figure out a way to sequence the orchestral version within the record, so I decided to carve it up as a book-ending motif, with the rock version squarely in the middle.” – Dan Bejar

In addition, Destroyer will concurrently release a two-song 12-inch as a companion to the new album. It includes a remix of “Forces From Above” along with the orchestral “Times Square, Poison Season,” a song that gave rise to several tracks on the new album, as detailed below. Pre-order HERE
