HAPPY DAY // Julianna Barwick Signs to Dead Oceans

Thursday is turning out to be a pretty great day! We have the great privilege of welcoming Julianna Barwick to the Dead Oceans family. The signing comes in conjunction with the announcement of Julianna’s new album, Nepenthe, set for release in August. It’s the follow-up to her The Magic Place, released in 2011.

Nepenthe was recorded with producer/engineer Alex Somers (Jónsi & Alex), a teenage female choir and members of Amiina and Múm. Stay tuned for more information on the forthcoming release! Until then, watch Julianna’s video for “The Magic Place” below.

Julianna has also confirmed a handful of summer shows. She’s all set to play at Yoko Ono’s Meltdown Festival in London on June 18. Other performances include the BSP Lounge in Kingston, NY on July 14 and England’s End of the Road Festival on September 1.

Watch Sun Airway Play “Oh, Naoko” Live For Yours Truly Presents: Sun Airway “Oh, Naoko” from Yours Truly on Vimeo.

Prepare yourselves for the Sun Airway rug to be yanked out from under you and to land face first in greatness! Yours Truly and Sun Airway teamed up to make a country-tinged live version of their Pitchfork-playlisted song “Oh, Naoko” from their Dead Oceans debut, Nocturne of Exploded Crystal Chandelier, that is going to make music fans lose control of their tear ducts.

“They came prepared to re-construct “Oh, Naoko” from an electro-pop wanderer to a folk-pop rambler, transforming every hopeful plea to Naoko into a valiant proclamation of love. And, all the while, redefining the idea of what makes a song great.”

You can read Jon Barthmus’s letter to the song’s inspiration, Yoko Ono, at Yours Truly.

Sun Airway has two tour dates this week that are of supreme importance:

12/14/10 New York, NY – Mercury Lounge w/ Lia Ices, Mike Wexler, Sebastian Blanck
12/17/10 Philadelpia, PA – Making Time: Voyeur w/ Light Asylum
