Kevin Morby

Singing Saw is a record written simply and realized orchestrally. In it, Kevin Morby faces the reality that true beauty – deep and earned – demands a whole-world balance that includes our darker sides. It is a record of duality, one that marks another stage of growth for this young, gifted songwriter with a kind face and a complicated mind.

Kevin Morby Shares Video For New Song “Aboard My Train,” New Album ‘City Music’ Out 6/16

Today Kevin Morby has shared a video for “Aboard My Train,” the new single off his forthcoming album, City Music (out 6/16 on Dead Oceans). Kevin self-directed the video for his new song, “Aboard My Train.”

“I wanted to make a video at home, something sort of lo-fi,” he explains. “I kind of missed the challenge of having to come up with something creative with little to no money.” As for the song, Kevin had this to say: “Doing what I do, people are constantly coming in and out of your life. The moment you think you’ll never see someone again, they reappear and that’s what this song is about starting with my first best friend, Pablo, who lived on my street in Tulsa, and was my first memory of having a best friend.” In the video, Kevin writes the names of many of these people who have made lasting impressions on his life.

Kevin Morby Announces New Album ‘City Music’ Out 6/16, Shares “Come To Me Now”

We’re pleased to announce that City Music, the new album by Kevin Morby, will be released June 16th. Full of listless wanderlust, it’s a collection inspired by and devoted to the metropolitan experience across America and beyond by a songwriter cast from his own mold. As he puts it: “It is a mix-tape, a fever dream, a love letter dedicated to those cities that I cannot get rid of, to those cities that are all inside of me.”

His fourth album, City Music works as a counterpart to Morby’s acclaimed 2016 release Singing Saw, an autobiographical set that reflected the solitude and landscape in which it was recorded. Saw was imagined as “an old bookshelf with a young Bob and Joni staring back at me, blank and timeless. They live here, in this left side of my brain, smoking cigarettes and playing acoustic guitars while lying on an unmade bed.”

And now follows City Music, the yang to its yin, the heads to its tails. It is a collection crafted using the other side of its creator’s brain, the jumping off point perhaps best once again encapsulated by an image. “Here, Lou Reed and Patti Smith stare out at the listener,” explains Morby. “Stretched out on a living room floor they are somewhere in mid-70s Manhattan, also smoking cigarettes.” It finds Morby exploring similar themes of solitude, but this time framed by a window of an uptown apartment that looks down upon an international urban landscape “exposed like a giant bleeding wound.”

Today, Kevin shared the first song off the new album, “Come To Me Now.” Organ pipes in as if filling the aforementioned room with warm sunlight, a friendly face returning from a long journey. It should make the ears of anyone familiar with Kevin’s music perk up, as the pump organ heralds in the new record & a sound unlike any other song in Kevin’s songbook.

“The organ you’re hearing on this song is an old pump organ from the 1800s, I wish I could remember the brand – but I don’t. This was my favorite part of recording this album, playing this thing and pumping air into it with the foot pedals, it had such a presence from the moment I entered the studio. For the first few days I think I thought it was just there for looks, that there was no way it still worked, but sure enough it did. Above it hung a framed photo of the original owner of the studios property who died sometime ago. Apparently his ghost still occupies the premises.”Kevin Morby

Read Morby’s statement below and visit Bandcamp for an exclusive conversation about the song.

Listen to “Beautiful Strangers” / “No Place To Fall”:
https://kevinmorby.bandcamp.com/album/beautiful-strangers-b-w-no-place-to-fall

This release is dedicated to and written for all the people I have never met but have only read about. The innocent people who were out living their lives and one day, without warning, had them taken away from them. People who liked to laugh, dance, and love in the way that we all do, but cant anymore. All those names and faces, all those beautiful strangers…

So here are two songs, “Beautiful Strangers” as well as my cover of Townes Van Zandt’s “No Place To Fall” that I have been closing my live show with over the past year. Any purchase of these two songs will go to support the work of Everytown For Gun Safety – an organization I have followed for quite some time. I believe in and support them in their efforts to make the world a safer place. So if you wish – you can donate as little or large as you’d like and I do hope you enjoy the songs. Do it for the kids.

Love and peace,
Kevin Morby

Jason Rzepka, Director of Cultural Engagement at Everytown for Gun Safety, added:

Kevin has penned a beautiful tribute to the victims of America’s ugly gun violence crisis — an emergency that claims 91 of our fellow citizens every day. We’re deeply grateful for his talents, thoughtfulness and efforts to rally more people to support the life saving work of gun violence prevention.

Kevin Morby Shares New Non-Album Track, “Tiny Fires”

821cdae6-f5c5-4bfe-a183-abec4bdb9baa

Today, Kevin Morby is sharing the song “Tiny Fires,” a non-album track that comes from the same time period as his recent critically acclaimed album Singing Saw . “Tiny Fires” was recorded and mixed by Drew Fischer in Los Angeles shortly after the completion of Singing Saw. What’s special about this live band recording is that it features members of Kevin’s current live band – including Meg Duffy on slide guitar and bass, and Justin Sullivan on drums – which the album does not, so not only is it representative of Kevin’s current live show, it’s a highlight. (Catch Morby live in one of the below cities!)

Since “Tiny Fires” was also written right after the completion of Singing Saw, so, as Morby says, “it is from that same brain.” Released as a digital 7″, “Tiny Fires” is b/w a solo acoustic demo version of the song, which was written and recorded in Kevin’s bedroom in Mt. Washington, Los Angeles.

PRAISE FOR KEVIN MORBY & SINGING SAW

“Kevin Morby speaks the language of records… His music comes from another place, one where you try and piece together meaning by tapping into a kind of collective unconscious, using whatever tools you have at your disposal.” – Pitchfork [Best New Music]

“Morby has a certain kind of light about him that touches even his darkest despair” – NPR Music

“The indie rocker punctuates the timely politics of his lyrical message—a manifesto about modern police brutality and racism that references a Martin Luther King Jr. quote—with fiery guitars and a huge choir.” – Entertainment Weekly on “I Have Been to the Mountain” [Best Songs of 2016]

“The former Woods bassist and Babies frontman reaches a new high on his beautifully arranged third solo effort, which merges Dylan-esque folk rock with a distinctly modern sensibility.” – Consequence of Sound

“Singing Saw is a force of a listen, and the most complete body of work of his career to date.” – Noisey
