Akron/Family

It was a century ago when I first saw Akron/Family perform, in the tiny back room of a bar in Brooklyn that held perhaps 20 people. Akron sat in chairs on a small stage festooned with red velvet and small theater light bulbs, their plentiful gadgets and musical toys littering more than a few tables – always seemingly on the verge of collapse. The young men awkwardly held their guitars in their laps or gently played drums/percussion, apparently trying not to knock anything over (to disastrous results) mid set. Cables and extension cords laced through their legs, they proffered a sort of delicate, improvisational experimentalism, laced with occasional rock grooves, but most extraordinarily, often punctuated with beautiful 4 part harmonies...

Watch: Akron/Family Live with Sun Ra Arkestra

Dirty Impound brings us a glorious video of Akron/Family performing “Everyone is Guilty” live at Philadelphia music venue, The Blockley. “Don’t stand off in your own little world. Be here in the now. Join us in our run through the wilds of the human condition. This is what Akron/Family cries in ways literal and figurative each time they gather in a music hall.”

If at all possible, the video captures the essence of the unique experience that is an Akron/Family show. Perhaps you have to really be there to fully understand, but nonetheless, it’s easy to see the connection between concertgoers and musicians. Where other bands simply perform-eliciting some type of barrier between themselves and their fans, Akron/Family dares the audience to include themselves into the show. It’s interaction at its finest.

As if seeing Akron/Family by themselves isn’t enough, Sun Ra Arkestra joins them in the performance. Take a break and watch this video; you’ll be happy you did.

New Akron/Family Video. See Them On Tour in January

Check out the new video for “Cast A Net” from Akron/Family’s S/T II: The Cosmic Birth and Journey of Shinju TNT. The video follows a young protagonist as she journeys through a maritime wonderland. Directed by Percept Visual’s Brian Ziffer this video perfectly captures the soothing qualities of “Cast A Net” which plays like the perfect bedtime fairy tale.

In other news, Akron/Family will be touring North America and launching a new record label, Family Tree Records. Supporting AK on the US tour dates will be Denver’s Bad Weather California who are also the first signees to Family Tree Records. For more info on this new project check out the Family Tree Records website. Akron/Family Tour Japan

In July, Akron/Family will return to Japan where the creative genesis for their latest album S/T II: The Cosmic Birth and Journey of Shinju TNT took place. It is uncertain whether they’ll be able to return to the cabin in the volcanic hillside of Mount Meekan where the album first took shape, but we’re sure AK will be trolling the street vendors for the very best and strangest in Japanese underground music. Either way this signals a nice completion of a creative cycle that birthed an album that still runs circles around our brains. Check out the full tour dates below:

Akron/Family Release New Video, Bring Dreamtime Tour To Europe

Late last week, our friends in the UK at The Quietus (who loved Akron/Family’s Shinju TNT) premiered the video “Light Emerges,” the third single from the record. The video features what looks to be the most fun game of flashlight tag we’ve ever seen, but see for yourself above.

Akron/Family are currently bringing their AKAK DREAMTIME TOUR to Europe. Click through for the full list of dates. Read the rest of this entry »
