WATCH // Califone Debut Interactive Video for “Stitches” on Tumblr, Start Living Room Tour August 21st

In a unique approach to a music video, Califone worked with filmmaker Braden King and programmer Jeff Garneau using Tumblr to debut a beautiful and haunting interactive video of the new album’s title track “Stitches”. Garneau programmed the video to randomly pull images and animated GIFs from a previously selected set of Tumblr sites to provide a truly distinctive experience every time the viewer watches the video. Head over to Califone’s Tumblr HERE to find and experience the hidden video that Nate Auerbach, Tumblr’s Music Evangelist, calls, “deeper than an album jacket and more intense than a music video, because it is living and breathing.”

“[Tumblr sites] represent a new kind of storytelling — a new way of ordering, synthesizing and making sense of our lives and experiences that transcends ‘once upon a time.’ “

director Braden King

As source material for the video, Califone’s Tim Rutili sent King pages of a notebook he used while writing the the album. These pages gave King the idea to make the video self generated and allow viewers a level of interactivity so no two viewings were the same. Each image displayed is clickable and includes a note which the viewer can then repost with a link to the original source and even just hovering over an image in the stream will bring it forward and focused. On his inspiration, King says Tumblr sites “represent a new kind of storytelling – a new way of ordering, synthesizing and making sense of our lives and experiences that transcends ‘once upon a time.’” Additionally, to further expand the experience, the site is taking suggestions of additional Tumblr sources via the built in Ask interface.

Rutili explains that the title track and the new album both “stitch together the flood of images and feelings triggered by opening yourself up and loving someone; the courage and freedom found in the acceptance of vulnerability and joy crossed with the familiarity and alienation that can be found in co-dependence and pain.”

As the Tumblr video explores, the new album collects sounds around Rutili, both musical and ambient, to create something truly unique and new for the artist. Stitches will be out September 3rd on Dead Oceans and is available for preorder on Amazon, iTunes, at your local record store, and through SC Distribution. Califone’s tour starts in late August with a string of dates playing living rooms before heading up the East Coast with Richard Buckner.
