Strand Of Oaks Release Video for “Cry”

Today, Strand Of Oaks premieres the video for “Cry,” the confessional crux of “rock n roll masterpiece” (Salon) Hard Love. Directed by Brody Bernheisel, the video serves as an intimate portrait of Tim Showalter’s relationship with his wife Susan Showalter rife with struggle and laughter, letdowns and reconciliation.

Says Sue: “The idea was to have us just interact naturally, but as the song went on, I got more and more emotional thinking about what we’ve been through, and the fact that the song is really my perspective on everything. I think it does a perfect job capturing our relationship in a pretty unfiltered way, good and bad, laughing and crying. After I saw it, it felt so real and moving that it had to be the video. It just made so much sense…the vulnerability of it all.”

Tim’s response: “Couldnt have said it better myself.”

Hard Love has been deemed “a singular statement that’s among rock’s best of 2017 so far” (Entertainment Weekly). Stereogum says it’s “incredible,” adding that it “channels intimate battles into universal catharsis.” The Philadelphia Inquirer calls Strand Of Oaks “one of the leading lights of the Philadelphia rock renaissance.” Last week it made a strong opening on the Billboard charts, debuting at #5 Heatseekers and Top 10 on the Americana / Folk and Independent Album Charts.

Strand Of Oaks begin their US tour this Friday, including shows in Philadelphia, NYC, Chicago, LA, and more. Dates below.

Bleached’s ‘Can You Deal?’ EP + New Video for “Can You Deal?” Out Today

Bleached, led by sisters Jennifer and Jessica Clavin, have released the Can You Deal? EP today. Alongside the release they’ve shared a new video directed by Ryan Baxley for the title track, a song which deals with the band’s frustrations with gender bending used to define their music and the reductive habit of referring to them and others as “girl bands.” Jennifer Clavin describes the video,

“When Ryan told us his idea for this video we were excited because it reminded us of a Twilight Zone episode. In this story, our “human band” is viewed as extraterrestrial to the alien world, and we are trying to put an end to the exploitive media station known as “Singular World News.” We loved the idea of taking what this song is about, how being women in music is still viewed as a novelty, to a more dramatic level where we the humans are the aliens in this alternate society.”

Jennifer Clavin is publishing the limited edition “Can You Deal?” Zine, a collection of shared experiences on this subject through essay, visual art, poetry, lyrics and more from artists. For a full list of contributors, visit http://www.canyoudealzine.com/. All net proceeds will go to Planned Parenthood.

Kane Strang Shares Official Video For New Single, “Oh So You’re Off I See”

“Strang has a gift for pulling diamonds from the rough” – Pitchfork

kane still

Kane Strang’s new video for “Oh So You’re Off I See” is transportive. He and his band bounce back and forth from their practice space, called the Attic in Dunedin, to Central Otago – both in Strang’s home country of New Zealand. For all intents and purposes they seem largely unaware of their gorgeous natural surroundings – I guess that’s what happens when you lock into a groove this good. Throw in a distorted effect made from cuts of glass and you’ve got yourself one disorienting and delightful video.

“Oh So You’re Off I See” is the first single from Strang’s forthcoming album due out later this year on Dead Oceans. Strang’s North American tour kicks off this Friday, March 3rd at Baby’s All Right in Brooklyn and takes him to Savannah Stopover, SXSW, Treefort, and more. Strang’s initial SXSW schedule has also been announced. These are his first shows ever outside of New Zealand. A full list of dates is below.

Bleached Share “Flipside,” New Song Off ‘Can You Deal?’ EP

40157f0a-381c-4fe5-9e5a-bba49f4caf2e

Bleached, led by sisters Jennifer and Jessica Clavin, are set to release the Can You Deal? EP on March 3rd. Recorded quickly in the midst of a break between months of touring, the EP captures the raw energy the band had been experiencing on stage. After sharing the title track “Can You Deal?”, which dealt with the band’s frustrations with gender being used to define their music & the reductive habit of referring to them and others as “girl bands”, Bleached now present “Flipside”, one of their best songs to date.

Jennifer Clavin describes the song:

“I was thinking about the relationship we have with an album or a song and how we connect them to what is happening in our lives, like falling in love, being fascinated by a new friend, or some kind of pivotal moment in life corresponding with the record I’m listening to. Once the comedown of that time hits I can’t even listen to that record without thinking about that time or that person. Albums are the soundtrack to our lives, and this song is an ode to the nostalgia certain albums bring.”

As previously announced, Jennifer Clavin is publishing the limited edition “Can You Deal?” Zine, a collection of shared experiences on this subject through essay, visual art, poetry, lyrics and more from artists. An additional 500 copies of the zine will be printed as the first 500 sold out in 4 days! Newly added contributors include JD Samson, Bethany Cosentino (Best Coast), Cassie Ramone (Vivian Girls), Suzy Gardner and Donita Sparks (L7), Shannon Funchess (Light Asylum), Jenny Eliscu, and more. For a full list of contributors, visit http://www.canyoudealzine.com/. All net proceeds will go to Planned Parenthood.

Both the Can You Deal? EP and Zine are available for pre-order now. Bleached will tour North America supporting The Damned this spring.

Califone Announces Quicksand/Cradlesnakes Deluxe Reissue Coming March 17th via Dead Oceans, Shares Track “Slowness”

unspecified-2

Califone’s second full-length release, 2003’s Quicksand/Cradlesnakes, is possibly the most beloved of Tim Rutili’s seminal works. It was with this record that Califone’s thoughtful, off-kilter sound became more fully realized, woven together with strings of country blues, AM-radio pop, peculiar sounds and percussion, and opaque-but-visual lyricism. Rutili is generous with the space in his songs, allowing the collaborative players to come into the studio and occupy their own pockets of sound.

The end result is a rich, textured record, fleshed out by multi-instrumentalists Jim Becker and Joe Adamik, while longtime Rutili collaborator Ben Massarella holds down percussion, a drummer Rutili notes could “build a rhythm track out of a squeaky straw and a cup of ice.”

Ultimately, though, the brilliance of Quicksand/Cradlesnakes comes down to Rutili’s songwriting – “Vampiring Again” is easily the most pop song Rutili’s ever written (he likens it to the Smiths), rollicking, riff-heavy track “Your Golden Ass” serves as a study in falling apart, while “Michigan Girls” endures as a staple at Califone’s shows. It’s the sound of a band led by the vision of a leader, but one who offers sonic flexibility.

After years of being unavailable on vinyl, the forthcoming Quicksand/Cradlesnakes reissue will be out on March 17th via Dead Oceans, and will include eight bonus tracks. A link to listen to “Slowness,” as well as Tim Rutili tour dates, can be found below.

Praise for Quicksand/Cradlesnakes

“It’s a strange balancing act that Rutili and crew capably pull off, straddling the chasm between the straightforward and the self-consciously left of center.” – Billboard

“In a way, Quicksand/Cradlesnakes is like a summation of all that Califone is about, and the first three tracks alone touch on almost everything the band has done to date… In the end, the consistency of this album in the face of such diversity is inspiring. The songs, interludes, pacing and sequencing are all as they should be, helping to make Quicksand/Cradlesnakes Califone’s best record.” – Pitchfork
