WATCH // Mark McGuire Shares “Noctilucence” Visuals + Ambient Mix Via The Fader

Dive into the mind of Mark McGuire with us. Today via The Fader, Mark has shared visuals for an extended version of “Noctilucence” from his upcoming EP of the same name. Read Mark’s introspective take on the creative process below, and watch the video above or on YouTube.

“Noctilucence is about things becoming vibrant at night, the electricity of the inner life, and listening when you’re the only ears for miles and miles. I do most of my recording and writing at night, as well as much of my interstate traveling for tours and personal journeys. There’s something that seems to come to life in twilight, and my nights have always felt shrouded with ideas and expression. For this song and this album in general, I wanted to channel that energy and pay homage to that presence I’ve felt in every silent, dark movement of shadows, and the electric, fluorescent writings on the wall.” – Mark McGuire

Pre-order Noctilucence now via SC Distribution, iTunes, Amazon, and your local record store.

WATCH // Greylag Release “Yours To Shake” Video Via NPR Music, Share “Songs That Inspire Us” Mix Via Guitar World

We’d like to welcome to the world the first of many Greylag videos. The Portland trio enlisted director Ben Fee to construct a video to match the intensity of single “Yours to Shake” from their debut album Greylag. Watch the trippy video above or at NPR Music.

“Often times, people are after things that they are just instinctively drawn towards. Whether or not those things are good for them, doesn’t matter too much. And those things also blind those people in the process—making them bypass, misuse, under appreciate some really magical things in the journey. Even when they fly so close to their goal, and they can see it could be the end of them, the folks still go further. This doom, and perspective, and instinct, we wanted to paint in a visually poetic way, so as to give a strong feeling, instead of beating a message into the viewers heads with an obvious ABC narrative.” - Ben Fee, Director

But wait, there’s more! The band has also thrown together a Spotify playlist detailing “Songs That Inspire Us” for Guitar World. Check it out here.

EP ANNOUNCE // Mark McGuire ‘Noctilucence’ EP Out 11/11 On Dead Oceans, Hear Title Track Now

“‘The term “noctilucence” comes from “noctilucent clouds”, the name given to clouds which, for some reason, emit a brilliant vibrance at night. On this recording we find our subject diving into the electric waters of the night sky, in long drives across the vast deserts of America. It’s a recording about the discovery and understanding of the shadow, entrance to the realm not controlled by the light of day, or the logic of reason. It’s about confronting nocturnal terrors and all of those things that go bump in the night…“Noctilucence” is a deep stare into the infinite eye of the shimmering night sky of the future, and all it holds in its gaze.” – Mark McGuire, 2014

Announced earlier today via Pitchfork, prolific Dead Oceans artist Mark McGuire will release Noctilucence, on November 11. The followup to the critically acclaimed Along The Way was written over the past two years between Los Angeles and McGuire’s hometown of Cleveland, OH. Keep an ear out for standout track “Noctilucence”, the sprawling and expansive 12 minute centerpiece of the EP that very well might be the most ambitious track McGuire has ever released. Listen above or on our SoundCloud/Youtube pages. Full cover art and track listing after the jump

ALBUM RELEASE // Greylag Self-Titled Debut Album Out Now Worldwide, EU Tour Starts Nov. 11th

“They seem like an antidote handed down from God to shut up certain people who like to complain that they just don’t make rock bands like they used to”

- Stereogum ["Band To Watch"]

Portland-based trio Greylag joined the Dead Oceans family back in July. We first got a glimpse of the band at this year’s SXSW and today their self-titled debut full-length LP, Greylag, is out now worldwide on Dead Oceans (UK release Nov. 3rd). Recorded with Phil Ek (Band of Horses, Fleet Foxes, Modest Mouse, The Shins) at Seattle’s Avast Studio, Greylag is a followup to the band’s 2012 seven-track EP The Only Way To Kill (Ninth Street Opus).

Greylag is out now via SC Distribution (deluxe bundle) iTunes, Amazon, and your local record store.

Critics agree:

“Another’ is the first track on Greylag’s tremendously appealing self-titled debut (due out October 14), and it sets the tone for the record’s catchy and briskly strummed mini epics… the widescreen majesty of this music is decidedly rock”

- Grantland

“the trio string together various bits of ’60s rock influences: mountain-man harmonies that echo Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, gentle acoustic guitars ala John Fahey and early-day Lindsey Buckingham, and even a tinge of Led Zeppelin swagger. The result is a resoundingly confident preview that is both earnest and sweeping.”

- Consequence of Sound

“From its opening chords, the album…conjures up potent sounds of Led Zeppelin’s acoustic side”

- The Oregonian

“Greylag’s wanderlusting, exploratory sound is a perfect fit for Dead Oceans”

- Portland Mercury
