Premiering today at Stereogum, the new video for Bill Fay’s “This World” features Super 8 film projected onto faces of people, a combination of both strangers to and friends of the director. Bill’s labelmate and long time fan, Califone’s Tim Rutili, directed the video, commenting, “thinking about making images for this music triggered faces and memory. It made me want to stare into a stranger’s eyes.” To add ease to the up-close filming, Rutili asked participants to talk about their very first childhood memory. You’ll notice a cameo of Jesus Lizard’s David Yow. Watch above.
Bill Fay’s Life Is People came out last week and has since received numerous rave reviews from fans and critics alike! Check it all out at Any Decent Music, who has compiled a great list for your reading pleasure. You can order your copy from SC Distribution!
Our sister label Secretly Canadian has raved about the Pumphouse Sessions from last year’s Pickathon Festival in Oregon already. Now, we over here at Dead Oceans get to sing their praises as well. Watch this lovely video that Califone recorded with the Pumphouse crew in a small shack situated deep in the woods at Pickathon 2011. The sessions were recorded by the very talented folks over at Live and Breathing, who would be worth your time to check out. Hopefully they’ll be back in action at Pickathon next summer.
If you’re going to be in New York City this week, you’ve got two chances to see Califone! As part of the prestigious New York Guitar Festival, Califone will debut their original film score to Buster Keaton’s Go West. See it live one night only this Thursday, January 19th at Merkin Concert Hall; this will truly be a unique opportunity to see Califone. Show details HERE.
When asked about the opportunity to create the film score, Tim Rutili (of Califone) said, “Califone scoring music for a Buster Keaton film makes almost too much sense. We will try to capture the inner stillness and the outer chaos on Buster’s migration west. Perfect.” The Silent Films/Live Guitar series celebrates the excellence of chosen guitarists. In pairing these artists with a silent film, each is given the opportunity to create a soundtrack out of their own diverse and innovative backgrounds.
The fun doesn’t stop there! Califone will play a second show at Littlefield the following evening, Friday, January 20th. Gem Club will open! View show details HERE.
Califone will play the Pickathon Music Festival outside Portland, OR August 5-7 and will follow their festival appearance with a trek down the west coast. Check out full dates below and the band’s latest video for “Better Angels” from their most recent release All My Friends Are Funeral Singers above.
