John Vanderslice Guest Editor on Magnet all week!

3hhs_17510001

If having taste isn’t half the battle, but the whole war, then John Vanderslice is a true conquerer. You will come across very few people with such an open mind and expansive palette.

This week, you can read about some of JV’s favorite things (kinda’ like Oprah’s, but not really) via Magnet’s weekly guest editor series. In his first post, he writes about the exceptional French film, The Class. One might think the story of an inner city school and its new teacher  (To Sir, with Love; Dangerous Minds, etc.) has been exhausted, but this is a tremendous film, and only the beginning of JV’s suggestions!

Also check out the Q&A with JV on Magnet, in which he discusses his latest album, White Wilderness and collaborating with Minna Choi and the Magik*Magik Orchestra, living in the Golden Age of music, and how he now approves of Bill Gates.

With the help of the Magik*Magik Orchestra, ‘The Piano Lesson’ satisfyingly blends modern chamber music and Vanderslice’s idiosyncratic pop. The end result is a record that’s not only surprisingly loose, but also remarkably distinctive.

Today’s SOTD on NPR, “The Piano Lesson,” is available for download HERE.

On the eve of the White Wilderness release, we have quite a few sweet deals to share.

You can get the digital album for $3.99 on Amazon MP3. It comes with an exclusive bonus track of a cover of “Walkabout” by Atlas Sound.

Viva Vanderslice!

John Vanderslice’s “Sea Salt” is featured on today’s All Songs Considered! You can also stream the track here. Robin Hilton premiered the skinny on the new album, White Wilderness, which will be out January 25. Hilton remarks that the new material is just the right amount of expansion parred with the familiar sound and comfort JV is known for. Bob Boilen said it might be the best thing he’s heard from John Vanderslice.

You might remember JV and the Magik*Magik Orchestra’s performance in early 2009 at San Fransisco’s American Music Hall.

And that’s about everything we can tell you about White Wilderness, but be sure expect more in the coming days!
