Danielle Ponder Announces New Album Everything Has Changed Out October 9, New Single “Sun and Moon” Out Now!

Danielle Ponder, the Rochester-born, Atlanta-rooted singer-songwriter with one of the most commanding voices in music, announces her sophomore album, Everything Has Changed, out October 9th via Dead Oceans — her label debut, released in partnership with Phoebe Bridgers. She also shares the lead single, “Sun and Moon,” an irresistible declaration on the exhausting cycle of a love that only shows up when you’re already walking away. Produced by Grammy Award winner Mike Elizondo alongside Barney Lister, the song pairs Ponder’s towering vocals with a groove that belies its weight: how much of ourselves we surrender to people who mistake pursuit for love. “You ain’t no catcher, you just want to chase me,” she sings, turning heartbreak into personal redemption.

“I love that this song is upbeat but the lyrics are quite sad. The sun and moon provide a beautiful symbol of two lovers who spend a life chasing each other but never quite coming together. The drums and tempo of the song remind me of the push and pull chase that I’ve been in more than I’d like to admit. It’s not until the end where the drums stop that she realizes how exhausted she is with the game and longs for something deeper.”

Everything Has Changed marks Ponder’s most self-assured work to date. Across its 14 tracks — produced by Grammy Award winning producer Mike Elizondo and Barney Lister with additional contributions for Bartees Strange,  Avis Reese, and Ray Jones — she leans into the contemplative meaning of her last name, letting every part of herself reveal itself in the music. Where lead single “Power,” born from a trip Ponder took to Dakar, Senegal at 17, looks outward as a celebration of Black resilience and diaspora, “Sun and Moon” turns inward. “There’s a lot of calling out on this album more than I typically would do,” Ponder explains, “and it’s because I am at the end of the game of centering men and feeling like they’re saviors whose validation will make me finally worthy.”

Ponder spent years as an attorney focused on criminal justice reform, a path shaped by her brother’s sentencing to 20 years to life when she was 16. She didn’t seriously imagine music as more than a side pursuit until her late 30s, leaving law behind in 2021, at 39, to pursue her artistry full time. “The lawyer is going to kill me,” she says, “but the artist is going to save me.” “I used to not want to talk about my age,” she adds. “But honestly, I have a story to tell that comes from the years of experience I’ve had.”
